Clive Owen has really become one of my favorite actors, since I first discovered him in the movie
Closer, as Julia Roberts' character's seemingly cool, calculating husband. Then in
Inside Man, he again gave a brilliant performance as a smart, calm and cool-demeanored bank robber on a mission.
In the new movie
Children of Men, his character is actually quite atypical comparing to his previous works, yet he handled his role very well. His character, Theo, was once a political activist in a world where all human beings had suffered infertility, but became lethargic after his son died. His son's death also led to an eventual fallout between him and his wife Julian, who was also an activist. Since then, he has just been living a loser's life, drinking and smoking, and does not care about anything about the world.
While everyone in the world is mourning over the death of the youngest person on earth, an 18-year-old young man, Theo does not seem to care at all. Then a woman, who has become miraculously pregnant, changes his life. He agrees to escort her to a group called Human Project, where she and her baby will be safe and receive good care. But the activist group he once belonged to want the pregnant woman for themselves to use as a hostage to achieve their political cause, so Theo has to protect her from every kind of danger through the journey.
Clive Owen really did a great job in his role, as a man who struggles with the reality of having lost his son and then his wife (killed by the activist group early in the movie), but somehow finds the strength to go on to protect the hope of saving humanity from extinction. Cinematography is also excellent, with the camera following the movement of our characters, making the actions seem more realistic and lively. The frantic pace also makes the movie even more effective as a thriller. To sum it all up, this thought-provoking thriller (sounds like a paradox haha) about hope in humanity really is one of the greatest films I've seen during the past year. It's definitely worth seeing!
